On Sunday, July 12, the navy of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that it has closed the strategic Strait of Hormuz until further notice. This decision follows an encounter earlier in the day involving several ships that attempted to traverse the waterway via what Iranian authorities described as an “unapproved route.”
According to an official statement released by the IRGC navy on Telegram, warning shots were fired at the vessels, resulting in one ship being struck and forced to stop. The Iranian military stated that the closure will remain in effect until the United States ceases what it termed as “interference in the region.” Until that condition is met, the announcement emphasized that no vessels will be granted permission to pass through the waterway.
The IRGC also issued a stern warning regarding future military interactions in the area. The statement declared that any “new act of aggression” against Iranian forces would be met with a severe response, specifically noting that any new enemy bases established in the region would be targeted.
