Brazilian law enforcement authorities are investigating whether a network involving foreign agents from the United States, Argentina, and Israel assisted former presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro in fleeing Brazil following his election loss. A senior Brazilian official stated on Saturday that a former agent from Israel's Mossad intelligence service was spotted following the van transporting Bolsonaro toward the border with Argentina.
Bolsonaro, who lost his presidential runoff election to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, departed for the United States but declined to share specifics regarding his route. In an interview, he remarked, "I will never speak about the path that I took," while refusing to answer whether American officials facilitated his departure. Addressing speculation of Washington's role, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio rejected allegations of official assistance, stating that the "US government was not involved directly in any of the moves that were made."
Explaining his rationale for seeking refuge in the United States, Bolsonaro claimed that Brazil's democratic institutions were no longer functioning effectively and that he risked arrest for expressing his political opinions. "American institutions still work. While in Brazil, they no longer function," he said. He also claimed that U.S. President Donald Trump concurred with his assessment of Brazil's political landscape, stating, "Trump is convinced that Brazil is no longer a full democracy."
Throughout the post-election period, Bolsonaro has repeatedly questioned the fairness of the vote without producing evidence, disputing official statements from electoral authorities. Directing criticism at the head of Brazil's Superior Electoral Court, he stated, "I guarantee to you that he doesn't know what he's talking about." He further asserted, "Not me, not you, not anyone who is watching, and not the president of the Superior Electoral Court can say with 100 percent certainty that there wasn't fraud."
Bolsonaro also recounted his final interaction with his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro, prior to departing the country. He described his father as being terrified after Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered him to surrender his passports amid a money-laundering investigation. Recalling their last conversation, Flavio noted that the elder Bolsonaro looked at him with tears in his eyes and said, "You already know where this is going." Flavio responded, "I told him that I knew, and that I knew what I had to do." The elder Bolsonaro was subsequently convicted and sentenced to 27 years in prison for plotting a coup following his 2022 election defeat.
Meanwhile, Brazilian law enforcement officials hold little expectation of extraditing or capturing the younger Bolsonaro in the United States. A senior security official characterized the chances of apprehending him and bringing him back to Brazil as "zero."
