US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has defended President Donald Trump's decision to waive sweeping sanctions and tariffs on Russia, characterizing the measure as a 60-day pause. According to Rubio, the administration is utilizing this two-month period to evaluate the potential economic consequences of these restrictions on both the United States and the global economy, noting that the impact extends to several nations.

Rubio linked current global energy price volatility to the intersection of various international conflicts. He specifically pointed to the US war on Iran and Houthi strikes on Saudi Arabia as factors that are colliding to disrupt markets. He stated that these conflicts are having a significant impact on global oil and diesel prices as well as broader economic stability.

President Trump, who announced the decision late Saturday, described the move as beneficial for both the United States and the world. The executive order, which was signed on Friday, follows an agreement between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin that permits Russian diesel exports in exchange for the easing of economic measures. This policy shift occurs as high fuel costs continue to place pressure on US road haulage, agriculture, and construction sectors ahead of next month's midterm elections, where Republicans are facing significant electoral headwinds.

The executive order has faced immediate bipartisan criticism from lawmakers. Republican Senator Thom Tillis took to X to label the waiver as "beyond irresponsible," arguing that the President should focus on resolving the Iran situation to lower energy prices rather than providing a benefit to Vladimir Putin. Similarly, Republican Senator Ted Cruz described the move as "a mistake" during a segment on Fox News. Furthermore, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that the decision serves to directly reward Moscow.
