A tragic shooting occurred at Silver Rail elementary school in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, resulting in the deaths of three children and one teacher. Authorities reported that the assailant, a 16-year-old Bend resident, was killed by a community member who intervened during the attack. In addition to the four fatalities, a seven-year-old and a 54-year-old remain in the hospital with critical injuries.

The incident began at 1:02 p.m., just an hour before the school day was scheduled to end. According to police, the gunman forced his way into the building by firing at locked doors. Dispatchers received multiple reports of an active shooter, including one 911 caller who stated that an individual armed with a long gun had fired upon their vehicle. Numerous other callers confirmed that the shooter had entered the school and continued the attack inside. By the time law enforcement officers arrived at the scene, the suspect had already been apprehended and killed by a bystander.

Officials have not yet publicly identified the gunman or confirmed if he had any prior connection to Silver Rail elementary school. The city, which has 100,000 residents and is situated roughly 170 miles south-east of Portland, is reeling from the event. Steven Cook, superintendent of Bend-La Pine Schools, urged the community to support one another during the grieving process, stating, "Please hold your children, hold your loved ones tight tonight. Let them talk. Let them cry. Let them know we are going to rally and care for one another in this community."

Oregon governor Tina Kotek described the bystander’s intervention as a heroic act, while acknowledging the emotional toll it takes on those involved. Meanwhile, Bend mayor Melanie Kebler expressed the collective struggle to process such an unimaginable loss. The school district confirmed that all schools will remain closed on Friday. The FBI is currently assisting local authorities with the ongoing investigation, according to agency director Kash Patel.
