Tech billionaire Elon Musk is returning to an official advisory role within President Donald Trump's administration. The Pentagon has announced that Musk will co-lead a new initiative known as Project Meridian, which is tasked with conducting a comprehensive study on the future of warfare.

This appointment marks a return to government service for Musk, who previously led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). During his prior tenure, which concluded in May 2025, he was responsible for overseeing widespread job cuts across the federal government. Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth introduced the new initiative during a speech at the Quantico military base on Wednesday, describing it as a mission to leverage the expertise of the nation's top innovators and technologists. Hegseth noted that the project aims to identify critical domains for conquest and capabilities that must be mastered to maintain a strategic advantage.

Project Meridian will be co-led by Musk alongside Palmer Luckey, the 34-year-old co-founder of the defense technology firm Anduril Industries, and 83-year-old former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. The project will incorporate a hand-picked group of private sector leaders and subject matter experts from across academic, policy, and innovation ecosystems. Hegseth has mandated that the project's findings be submitted within a 120-day timeframe.

Although Musk and President Trump experienced a notable public falling out regarding spending legislation after the 2024 election, the two have since reconciled. Musk has maintained a frequent presence at the White House, participating in various high-level events. Most recently, he was seen seated next to the president during a lunch with artificial intelligence executives, where he joined other leaders in signing a voluntary AI safety accord that the president described as morally binding. His recent activities also include attending a state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping and joining a business delegation to Beijing in May.

Musk remains a significant financial backer of Republican causes. According to Federal Election Commission filings, he contributed over $250 million to support Trump and other Republicans during the 2024 election cycle, and he has donated at least $90 million toward the upcoming November midterm elections.
