British police on Sunday arrested five men on suspicion of preparing an act of terrorism and explosives offenses outside RAF Fairford, a military base in western England operated by the U.S. Air Force. Counterterror officers are leading the investigation, which includes searching three suspicious vehicles.
RAF Fairford, located approximately 100 miles (160 kilometers) west of London, serves as a crucial facility for the U.S. Air Force under an agreement established in the 1950s. It hosts the headquarters of the U.S. Air Force’s 501st Combat Support Wing and functions as a forward operating location for U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command. Its extensive runway makes it suitable for heavy bombers, and the base has been utilized in various conflicts, including the Gulf War, the 2003 Iraq war, and the recent U.S.-Israeli war on Iran.
The base has specifically been used for strikes on Iran during the conflict that commenced on February 28 this year. Britain initially declined President Donald Trump’s request to use its bases for striking Iran. However, then-Prime Minister Keir Starmer later announced an agreement to allow the U.S. to use British bases for “defensive” operations against Iranian missiles and their launch sites. This decision followed Iranian attacks targeting U.K. interests and Britain’s allies in the Gulf. American B-1 and B-52 bombers have since launched operations from Fairford during the Iran conflict.
Security around U.S. bases in Britain has been a point of concern. Anti-war campaigners have staged multiple protests outside RAF Fairford’s perimeter fence since the start of the Iran war. While it remains unclear if Sunday's arrests are directly linked to the Iran conflict, British security officials have previously indicated that proxies associated with Iran are responsible for a series of arson and sabotage attempts in the U.K. and other countries, often targeting the Jewish community. These officials have also warned that Tehran might broaden its targets within the U.K. if Middle East conflicts persist.
Local residents have observed a noticeable increase in security measures around RAF Fairford in recent days, including the presence of heavy vehicles blocking entrance gates. Meanwhile, RAF Lakenheath, another American base situated in eastern England, confirmed it is currently on Charlie alert. This is the second-highest threat level issued by the U.S. Department of Defense. According to U.S. military websites, Force Protection Condition Charlie is activated "when an incident occurs or intelligence is received indicating some form of terrorist action targeting personnel or facilities is likely." There was no immediate confirmation regarding the threat level at RAF Fairford, and U.S. European Command declined to discuss "specific force protection measures."
