Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov has announced that his nation and Türkiye are currently coordinating on a series of new projects designed to span the “coming decades.” Following talks in Baku on Tuesday with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, Bayramov stated that the discussions centered on sectors of traditional strategic importance. He placed particular emphasis on the energy sector, highlighting the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline and the Southern Gas Corridor as major contributors to the energy security of both countries and the wider region.
Bayramov noted that the two nations are actively working on projects with significant potential for the future. These initiatives include the development of alternative energy, such as plans to transport green energy produced in Azerbaijan to European markets via the Black Sea, as well as an energy cable project intended to link Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan region with Türkiye. Describing these as initiatives of “great strategic importance,” the minister stated that they would open new avenues for energy delivery to both domestic and European markets.
The two officials also held extensive discussions regarding multilateral cooperation, specifically within the Organization of Turkic States (OTS). With an OTS summit scheduled to take place in Türkiye next month, Bayramov noted that they had productive conversations regarding preparations for the meeting. Furthermore, Bayramov confirmed that Azerbaijan, as the COP29 presidency, fully supports Türkiye’s upcoming role as host of COP31. He emphasized that the Azerbaijani team, having remained active in climate diplomacy, will play a highly active role in supporting the execution of COP31.
Beyond energy and climate, the ministers exchanged views on the situation in the South Caucasus and the Middle East. Regarding regional connectivity, Bayramov reported rapid progress on new transport infrastructure within Azerbaijan. He stated that approximately 95 percent of the highways connecting mainland Azerbaijan to the Armenian border are now complete, while railway construction has reached about 75 percent completion. Reconstruction work on railway connections in the Nakhchivan region has also commenced.
Finally, Bayramov addressed the 42-kilometre section of the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP) project that passes through Armenian territory. He noted that direct talks between Yerevan and Washington are ongoing, with the US keeping Azerbaijan regularly informed. Once this “missing link” is established, he said, it will facilitate a significant new transport corridor linking Europe to Central Asia through Türkiye and Azerbaijan.
