Greece is currently facing its most significant outbreak of the West Nile virus on record, with health authorities confirming 324 locally acquired cases this year. This figure has surpassed the country's previous annual record of 317 cases, which was established in 2018.
According to data provided by the National Public Health Organization, the past week alone saw the addition of 34 new cases and six deaths, bringing the total death toll to 30. Of the total infections reported this year, 217 involved complications that impacted the central nervous system. Currently, 68 patients are receiving hospital treatment, with 32 of those individuals being cared for in intensive care units.
The Attica region, which encompasses the capital city of Athens, has been the most affected area, accounting for 56.8 percent of all reported exposures. While official statistics are high, health experts suggest that the actual number of infections is likely considerably higher, given that fewer than one percent of those who contract the virus develop severe symptoms.
The West Nile virus is primarily spread through the bites of infected mosquitoes. While the virus has seen widespread activity across Europe, Greek authorities have expressed the belief that the current outbreak has already passed its peak. Health officials continue to monitor the situation, noting that individuals over the age of 50 and those with compromised immune systems are at a heightened risk of suffering from severe illness.
