The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly has officially opened under the theme "Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All." The event commenced with a strong emphasis on the necessity of reviving international cooperation and confidence in multilateral institutions.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres addressed the Assembly, pledging his full support to the newly installed President, Khalilur Rahman. Guterres described the restoration of confidence in the global system as the defining challenge of the current era. He warned that international bodies, including the Security Council and global financial institutions, are currently under immense pressure due to a variety of severe forces. These challenges include ongoing armed conflicts, the risks associated with nuclear escalation, deepening poverty, climate disruption, and the rapid rise of unregulated artificial intelligence.
In his address, Guterres called for a renewed commitment to diplomatic engagement. He stated that through collaboration, dialogue, and diplomacy, the Assembly has the opportunity to rebuild the trust and good faith currently missing from global geopolitics, ultimately aiming to secure a healthier, more peaceful future for people worldwide.
President Khalilur Rahman echoed these sentiments, noting that the organization's survival over more than eight decades serves as a testament to its foundational mission. He remarked that the UN has played a critical role in preventing the world from falling into a third world war, which he identified as the primary reason for the institution's existence.
Rahman acknowledged the existence of a widening trust deficit that is currently testing the effectiveness of international institutions and collective action. He pledged to work tirelessly throughout the 81st session to bridge this gap, emphasizing that the organization must close the deficit by delivering results through renewed cooperation and dialogue.
