A sweeping analysis of global health data has identified "high certainty evidence" regarding the effectiveness of traditional Chinese exercises for the 1.7 billion people currently living with musculoskeletal conditions. These disorders, which affect individuals across all age groups and continents, serve as the leading cause of disability worldwide, with low back pain alone ranking as the primary contributor to disability in 160 countries. The conditions frequently lead to diminished mobility, reduced wellbeing, and early retirement from the workforce.
The study concluded that these exercises provide a safe, accessible, and cost-effective strategy to complement conventional medical treatments. Specifically, the researchers found that consistent practice—ideally for at least 150 minutes per week, split into sessions at least three times over a period longer than six months—yields the maximum health benefits. Tai chi, in particular, demonstrated significant success in easing chronic pain and stiffness while increasing bone mineral density for participants diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis.
Beyond physical improvements, the review noted that these exercises enhance mental health associated with neck pain and knee osteoarthritis, while also improving sleep quality for those suffering from fibromyalgia. Given these outcomes, the research team advocates for the integration of traditional Chinese exercises into clinical guidelines and rehabilitation programs on a global scale. By promoting these practices in community and primary care settings, policymakers and healthcare systems could potentially reduce reliance on pharmacological interventions and empower patients to take an active role in their own self-management, ultimately supporting healthy ageing and the prevention of chronic disease.
The overarching review of pooled data analyses of systematic reviews by researchers at hospitals and universities in China, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, drew on 92 data syntheses from 1,744 randomised controlled clinical trials.
