President Donald Trump is currently facing negative net job approval ratings in 47 out of 50 states and the District of Columbia, according to a recent projection from YouGov and The Economist. This trend aligns with record-low approval figures observed in nationwide polling.

The only states where a majority of respondents continue to approve of the president’s performance are Wyoming, which leads at +14, followed by Idaho at +9, and West Virginia at +6. Notably, these three states supported Donald Trump in the 2016, 2020, and 2024 presidential elections. Conversely, the most significant disapproval ratings were recorded in the District of Columbia at -83, and in Maryland and Vermont, both of which registered at -50. These three regions are historically recognized as Democratic strongholds that voted for former Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election.

The White House did not provide a comment regarding these findings as of Friday, Aug. 21. The president’s standing in these state-level projections mirrors his performance in national surveys. A Reuters/Ipsos poll published on Aug. 17 found that only one in three Americans approved of the president's job performance, marking the lowest level of approval tracked by the organization since Trump returned to the White House in 2025.

Public sentiment appears to be influenced by ongoing geopolitical tensions. In the same Aug. 17 poll, 80% of Americans—including 87% of Democrats and 71% of Republicans—expressed concern that U.S. involvement in the war against Iran would persist for an extended period. While individual polling results fluctuate, broader averages continue to show the president in negative territory overall.
