French President Emmanuel Macron has emphasized the urgent need for international support to bolster Ukraine's air defense capabilities. Writing on the social media platform X, Macron stated that it remains crucial to provide Ukraine with all necessary means to defend its skies and effectively thwart ongoing aggression. The focus of this effort centers on the Patriot air defense system, currently the only weaponry in the Ukrainian arsenal capable of neutralizing the high-speed ballistic missiles frequently deployed by Russia.
In recent months, Russia has significantly intensified its aerial campaign, particularly targeting the capital, Kyiv. These ballistic weapons are notoriously difficult to intercept and travel at such high speeds that they reach their targets within minutes, leaving civilians with almost no time to reach safety in underground shelters. The severity of these strikes was underscored on Saturday when a ballistic missile was fired toward Kyiv while German foreign minister Johann Wadephul was visiting for discussions with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The strike in the Boryspil district, situated on the city's eastern outskirts, resulted in two deaths and several injuries. The Russian defence ministry claimed it targeted trucks equipped for transporting long-range drones near Kyiv and Ukrainian army facilities in the Odesa region.
The impact of the conflict continues to spread across multiple fronts. In the Odesa region, governor Oleg Kiper reported that a prolonged and combined strike damaged a house and grain silos, wounding three people, including a 16-year-old girl. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials reported at least four fatalities following a series of strikes in the frontline Zaporizhzhia region. Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed on Saturday that these attacks were a response to Ukrainian strikes, which he alleged opened a “Pandora’s box” of retaliation. Kyiv maintains that its operations are designed to disrupt the financing of Moscow’s war effort.
As the violence persists, Ukrainian drone operations have targeted Russian territory and occupied areas. Russian officials confirmed that at least 10 people were killed in these attacks, which included strikes on an industrial facility and a warehouse owned by the online retailer Ozon. The company stated that the attack caused injuries, marking the first time Ozon has been hit following weeks of similar strikes against its competitor, Wildberries. In the Russian-occupied Crimean peninsula, the Moscow-backed governor of Sevastopol, Mikhail Razvozhayev, reported that a Ukrainian drone strike on a city bus resulted in two deaths and 10 injuries. Additionally, in the Luhansk region, Moscow-installed governor Leonid Pasechnik reported that two civilians, including a 16-year-old boy, were killed.
Diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict remain largely stalled. While the United States previously facilitated several rounds of direct talks between Kyiv and Moscow, it is now primarily focused on its own conflict with Iran. In response, allies within the Coalition of the Willing—an initiative led by France and Britain—are scheduled to meet on Monday to discuss strategies for increasing pressure on Moscow to halt the invasion.
On the Crimean peninsula, at least two people were killed and 10 injured when a Ukrainian drone struck a city bus, said the Moscow-backed governor of Sevastopol, Mikhail Razvozhayev. The peninsula was seized from Ukraine by Russia in 2014. In Luhansk region, an eastern Ukrainian province almost all of which is cont
