Brentford delivered a commanding performance to defeat Tottenham 3-0 in west London, serving as a stark reality check for a Spurs side that has invested over £300m in new talent this summer. Despite the high expectations following a period of significant recruitment, Tottenham struggled to manage the basics, allowing Brentford to dictate play throughout the match. It will worry Roberto De Zerbi that his side appeared to believe an extravagant transfer window meant they could stroll to victory, ultimately falling to a 2-0 deficit before the final whistle. The hosts, managed by Keith Andrews, appeared sharper and more cohesive, leaving Spurs fortunate that the deficit did not increase further.
Mamadou Sangaré, signed from Lens for £39m, proved to be a standout performer for Brentford, effectively outplaying Tottenham’s record signing Sandro Tonali, who did not look £100m well spent. The Malian midfielder was instrumental in the opening goal in the 12th minute, initiating a slick move that allowed Igor Thiago continued with a clever lay-off. Keane Lewis-Potter finished the sequence by beating goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky from close range. The early dominance continued as Thiago struck the crossbar and Dango Ouattara repeatedly threatened the Spurs defense, which featured new signings Andrew Robertson, Jan Paul van Hecke, and Marcos Senesi.
The tactical disparity between the two sides was evident as Brentford’s midfield, anchored by Sangaré, Vitaly Janelt, and Mathias Jensen, overwhelmed Tottenham’s trio of Lucas Bergvall, Conor Gallagher, and Tonali. Tottenham’s lack of intensity was a source of frustration for manager Roberto De Zerbi, who saw his team fail to contain Brentford’s width, particularly through Kevin Schade’s persistent challenges against Archie Gray. The second goal for the hosts arrived early in the second half; after Bergvall was dispossessed by Jensen, Kinsky failed to secure the resulting shot, allowing Janelt to convert the rebound.
De Zerbi attempted to change the dynamic at half-time by introducing Rodrigo Bentancur for Bergvall and Mateus Fernandes for his debut after his £85m move from West Ham in place of Gallagher. However, these changes could not prevent the match from slipping further away. The humiliation was compounded when Bentancur fouled Schade in the penalty area, though Thiago failed to capitalize on the resulting spot-kick, hitting the post. For Tottenham, the defeat serves as a difficult start, with significant frailties identified across all areas of the pitch, while Brentford’s stability and recruitment strategy yielded a dominant result.
