The US Supreme Court has rejected for a second time President Donald Trump's request to overturn a jury judgement that found him liable for the sexual assault and defamation of writer E. Jean Carroll. The high court did not provide any reason for its decision to decline the president's challenge.

In July, President Trump and the Justice Department had petitioned the Supreme Court to overturn an $83 million (€71 million) defamation verdict that had been awarded to Carroll. The former journalist and columnist first brought her allegations to the public in a 2019 memoir, testifying twice before New York juries that Trump sexually assaulted her in a department store dressing room in 1996.

Following the publication of her memoir, Carroll sued the president for defamation. She initiated the legal action after Trump accused her of fabricating the allegations to boost her book sales, claiming he had never met her and stating that “she’s not my type.” Throughout the legal proceedings, the president has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

Last month, the president paid $5.6 million (€4.8 million) to Carroll after a civil jury determined he had sexually assaulted and defamed her. This latest Supreme Court action marks the second time the president has asked the court to overturn the damages awarded in the case.
