The Jamaica Kingsmen finally broke their winless streak in the 2026 CPL season on Saturday, recording a comfortable five-wicket victory over the defending champions, Trinbago Knight Riders, at Sabina Park. The hosts successfully chased down a target of 183 with eight balls to spare, driven by a blistering performance from Kirk McKenzie.
McKenzie set the tone early, charging at Akeal Hosein in the opening over and dismantling him for 18 runs in the third. While the left-hander opted to play carefully against Sunil Narine, he still managed to connect on a slog-sweep. The Trinbago pacers struggled significantly, particularly during a 25-run over from Terrance Hinds that concluded the Powerplay, during which McKenzie sprinted to a 19-ball half-century. Although he hit a six off Usman Tariq, his aggressive knock ended when he was bowled after reaching 69 off just 25 balls. By the time he departed, the Kingsmen had already accumulated 93 runs in seven overs.
Reeza Hendricks provided steady support during the opening stand, contributing 37 runs off 29 balls. After McKenzie's exit, Usman Tariq claimed two more wickets, and Kieron Pollard dismissed Keacy Carty, creating a brief window of opportunity for the Knight Riders as the scoring rate slowed. However, Andre Russell remained composed, choosing to see off Narine’s final over. With 54 runs required from the last five overs, Russell unleashed his power, hitting a six and two fours off Hinds. A 28-run over from Nathan Edward then brought the target into single digits. Despite Russell’s late dismissal, skipper Rovman Powell steered the team home with singles to finish on 29 not out.
Earlier, the Knight Riders struggled for momentum after being put in to bat. Colin Munro labored for 16 runs off 26 balls before being removed by Russell. Alex Hales failed to capitalize on his start, and Nicholas Pooran struggled early, leaving the team at 77/2 after 12 overs. Kieron Pollard provided the necessary spark, clobbering three sixes and a four off Vitel Lawes. This acceleration helped Pooran, and the duo built a 67-run partnership for the third wicket. Despite late contributions from Jyd Goolie and Sunil Narine, the Knight Riders' total of 182/6 proved insufficient.
Brief Scores: Trinbago Knight Riders 182/6 in 20 overs (Kieron Pollard 44, Nicholas Pooran 44; Hunain Shah 2-31, Andre Russell 2-34) lost to Jamaica Kingsmen 183/5 in 18.4 overs (Kirk McKenzie 69, Reeza Hendricks 37, Rovman Powell 29*; Usman Tariq 3-21) by 5 wickets.
